Black tie events: Where philanthropy shines

by Roger Pettingell

Fundraisers have started for non-profits

Part III of this series features the annual galas that support organizations

Ritz-Carlton in downtown Sarasota
Sarasota Ritz-Carlton - Many of the annual galas are held at this popular venue for black tie events.

Many of the non-profit organizations in Sarasota continue to support the many services with the gracious giving of local philanthropists. The schedule is starting to fill up with annual black tie events where a major portion of the yearly budget depends on the success of these events. These gala nights or luncheons have become social events for those who are genuinely supportive of the organizations.

The season has started. Annual kick-off parties have been held recently for the Opera’s 2019-2020 season at Michael’s on the Bay at Selby Gardens and the Asolo Repertory Theatre welcomed back 200 guests last Tuesday at the Robert and Beverly Koski Center. The Safari Sarasota benefit for the All Hearts Fund, which supplies education and supplies to African families, was held Thursday at Michael’s on East. The fabulous affair, UnGala 2019: the evolution, the first of its kind in 10 years for the Ringling, was held at the Circus Arts Conservatory.

This past Saturday the 6th Annual JLS Lilly Luncheon and Fashion Show was an accomplished event, a display of the latest fashions from designer Lilly Pulitzer was themed as a Cuban Fiesta, with an after party on the rooftop of the Westin. Proceeds benefitted The Junior League of Sarasota, an organization that promotes volunteerism among women. Michael’s on East was the scene for the Raise the Roof Party earlier this month to benefit the Safe Place & Rape Crisis Center. SPARCC conducts a 24-hour crisis line and confidential services for those who survived a domestic or sexual assault encounter. In this event they had a city-wide scavenger hunt and rooftop after party. The Oceanic Evening at the Ritz-Carlton was sold out last weekend. The Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium benefit celebrated living coral.

Regularly scheduled Upcoming black tie events over the next few months

Raise the Roof Party - The new Westin rooftop was the scene for two local October fundraisers.

Dinner, dancing and an information session to express the organization’s gratitude typically accompany these upcoming black tie affairs. Keep the Dream Alive on November 18 at Michael’s on East will support the Benevolent Care fund. Entertainment will be a production from the Manatee Performing Arts Center. The fund supports those in need of assisted living or have out-lived their planned retirement years.

The Hospital Gala to benefit Sarasota Memorial Health has been set for January 11 at the Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota. The focus for this 2020 event has shifted from its $2.2 million emergency/trauma and cardiac services fundraising to support cancer services at the hospital. Its inaugural gala was in January of 2018 and now continues as an annual event.

One event scheduled in February is on the first Saturday and supports the Opera, to be held at the Ritz-Carlton. Guitarist Marc Mannino returns for the annual Sarasota Opera Gala, that also kicks off the Opera’s Winter Festival. Expect a silent auction, dinner and performances by the Principal Artists. Tickets can be purchased through TicketCity.

On March 28 the Firefly Gala benefitting the Forty Carrots Family Center will be held in the Ritz-Carlton ballroom. This year there was a silent auction followed by dinner, and the main event private concert with Billboard acclaimed rapper and songwriter Kesha. An after party and dancing followed. Forty Carrots started in 1993 and has served over 40,000 families and needy children in Sarasota and Manatee counties. The Wine, Women & Shoes event November 14 through 16 also benefits Forty Carrots.

Also in March is the Paws on the Catwalk event, which will be celebrating its 14th year in 2020. A benefit for the Humane Society of Sarasota County, the lively pet adoption 2019 program for the evening was followed by a fashion show on the runway catwalk. The luncheon and events were held at Art Ovation hotel in downtown Sarasota.

This year in March was the inaugural Red Ribbon Gala to support the CAN Community Health system, which provides for the well-being of those living with HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C and other sexually transmitted diseases. Billy Porter and MJ Rodriguez of the FX show, Pose! Discussed the Face of HIV at the event held in the Ritz-Carlton ballroom this year. Expect another grand showing in 2020 as the organizers work to start an annual tradition.

I am fortunate to be among 40 captains tasked with raising $10,000 each for the Blue Ties and Butterflies fundraiser in April. The $400,000 from the captains will be matched with auction and gala money to benefit the Child Protection Center, which will be in its 40th year in 2020 for the prevention of child abuse, family intervention and treatment programs. In 2017 the CPC helped 84,000 individuals and their families.

There is a bundle of black tie affairs in March, some of which haven’t had their dates set. Visit the upcoming schedule page often for updates as new events are added each Thursday. Currently there are over 460 events through October 31, 2020

Blue Ties and Butterflies for Child Protection Center

by Roger Pettingell

Blue Ties and Butterflies

Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over...

CPC executive director Doug Staley, with board directors Scott Anderson of the Gulf Coast Community Center and CPC board chairman Graci MCGillicuddy, are all smiles in their sea of envelopes at the dinner in 2013.
CPC executive director Doug Staley, with board directors Scott Anderson of the Gulf Coast Community Center and CPC board chairman Graci MCGillicuddy, are all smiles with the sea of blue envelopes at the dinner in 2013.

In 2012 my wife Alisa and I were asked to be on the advisory board of The Child Protection Center in Sarasota. Once involved we were introduced to statistics that were staggering. We learned that one out of four girls, and one out of six boys are sexually abused before the age of 18. Those statistics are completely unacceptable and appalling. Alisa is the chairperson of the Blue Ties and Butterflies fundraiser April 9 this year, working with her committee to get the word out about the evening and what funding would provide for the CPC.

She wanted to get involved to support the event increasing awareness, promoting advocacy and raising funds to support their treatment and prevention programs. Blue Ties and Butterflies is in its second year, a night when we ask the community to help support the CPC financially.

The night will begin at 6 p.m. at Michael’s on East. Dinner will follow before an auction of three great items: a ring donated by John Hardy and Saks Fifth Avenue, Sarasota, a catered dinner for 10 provided by Michael's on East, and artwork created by international artist Sabine Wiedenhofer Specifically for CPC. The CPC program will include a mission moment as well as a financial request for hope.

“Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over... it became a butterfly” is the fundamental promise of hope for these children. Over 53,000 children were reported to be sexually abused in Florida last year, and Florida is the second most deadly state for children of sexual abuse. These children need our help.

It is important that we all get involved. I hope to see you there so that we can all support this organization in their fight against sexual abuse. Tickets are still available through this link on the CPC website.

The CPC is mission driven. From their website the top statement is true, “Protecting Children is everyone’s job.” The Child Protection Center is a non-profit agency dedicated to the Prevention, Intervention, and Treatment of Child Abuse.
