Local New Year's Eve celebrations

by Roger Pettingell

Local parties and festivals to attend

There is a celebration with something for all next Sunday night

Holiday Village at the Mall at University Town Center
Ice Skating - Holidays on the Green at UTC Mall

I hope your holidays are going well. There are more chances to celebrate in the days ahead as we approach the strike of midnight next Sunday and head into 2018. Whether you like to celebrate with bubbly cheer or prefer a family-oriented celebration, you may be able to find the right place to ring in the new year.

There is true ice skating on an outdoor rink until January 15 in the Holiday Village at the Mall at University Town Center. They are closed today for Christmas but will be open New Year’s Eve until 8 PM, and will open again from 10 AM to 10 PM New Year’s Day. Skate rentals are $12 for 90 minutes. They started their Holidays on the Green celebrations in November and had holiday movies Fridays and Saturdays, ending with Miracle on 34th Street last Saturday. In addition there are free train rides and other activities for the kids. The full schedule is on their website.

The night for excitement on Sunday has many activities, some free to the public and some with full service that generally ends with champagne flowing at midnight. If you can’t make Times Square for the annual ball drop, one of the free events is somewhat comical involving a giant Pineapple drop at midnight. I’ve heard of other cities with similar drops, even a 20-foot walleye at the stroke of midnight on the shores of Lake Erie. There is even a Kumquat Drop at midnight mentioned later in this article. Our event will take place at Lemon Avenue and Main Street in downtown Sarasota. Arrive early for the celebration with live music, concessions, amusement rides and fireworks following the pineapple drop.

Reverend Barry and the Funk
Reverend Barry & Funktastic Soul at the Municipal Auditorium for Sarasota's revived New Year's Party

Sarasota revives its New Year’s Party in the municipal auditorium starting at 9 PM and lasting until 1 AM on the first day of 2018. Jonathan Cortez (JAC of All Trades) will be spinning records and the popular Reverend Barry and Funktastic Soul, featuring the Hellacious Horns, is a high-energy dance band to take you into the new year. Your advance ticket of $140 available through December 30 includes champagne, entertainment and catered appetizers. There are other reserved tables and VIP balcony seats available at www.THESRQNYE.com.

The New Year’s Eve Celebration at Selby Gardens is a black tie affair that starts at 8 PM and finishes at 1 AM. This is a sophisticated party and one last look at the Lights in Bloom display throughout the gardens. You can expect hors d’oeuvres, a seated four course dinner, live entertainment and dancing at Michael’s on the Bay. Then countdown to 2018 that ends with a champagne toast. It is also the place for a good view of fireworks over Sarasota after midnight.

McCurdy's Comedy Theatre in downtown Sarasota is having a special night with Dwight Slade, hosted by Les McCurdy. Slade is a comedy legend and winner of this year’s Boston Comedy Festival. From Portland, Oregon he has opened for Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, Jeff Beck and Dave Chappelle. On Sunday night the Green Room Lounge doors open at 8:30 PM. Raffles are planned and the New York Times Square ball drop will appear on a 70 inch screen at midnight, when there will be a champagne toast and party favors.

WSLR will host their New Year's Eve Surf Party starting at 8 PM in the Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center at 525 Kumquat Court, Sarasota. The Surf Tones will take you back to the 60s with its brand of surfing music, Do You Wanna Dance? Also planned is a version of beach blanket bingo with Elissa Bello and Ed, the Music Librarian, will spin music of the era while the Surf Tones are on their only break of the evening. Ready for this, there will be a Kumquat Drop at midnight.

Other area cities are having their celebrations as well. Old Main Street in Bradenton will have all their businesses open and food trucks that will line the street for their regular free Main Street Live celebration, but kick it up few notches for New Year’s Eve. The Dram, a group of six that has their own original songs of southern rock and folk music, will perform from 6PM to 10PM. Have Gun, Will Travel will take you to midnight with their blend of folk, rock and country music.

Just a little further north in Manatee County is the New Year's Eve Masquerade from 7 PM to 12:30 AM at the Blu Mangrove in Palmetto. The Eric Stone Band will perform their mix of rock, country, pop and reggae. There is no cover for this party but reservations are recommended by calling (941) 479-7827. The menu is limited that evening but still there is a good selection of seafood, steak and sushi plates.

Twinkle and Rock Soul Radio
Twinkle - Will ring in the Englewood New Year

The New Year's Eve Celebration in Olde Englewood Village is spread over three days to conclude at 1 AM on Monday with music from Twinkle and Rock Soul Radio. It all starts in Pioneer Park at 2 PM on Saturday with food vendors, a beer garden and carnival rides. Tom Brooks will be spinning records with music from the 70s and 80s for this free celebration. Dearborn Street will be closed for these days, opening at 4 AM on Monday.

These are just a few celebrations to select from, other venues will announce their parties and I have listed a few more on my upcoming events page. Have a wonderful Christmas day and I hope your new year will be filled with happiness. We would be glad to share this paradise, beginning in 2018. Rentals of Longboat Key residences

Wonderful opportunities for waterfront condominiums under $1 million

Fairway Bay #101
Fairway Bay - 1900 Harbourside Drive, #101

Last week in my REALTALK™ #151 video I discussed the opportunities for using your property on Longboat Key as a rental. I have four properties today that I am highlighting, and all of them have rental possibilities. They are all on the water, increasing their value and remarkably they are all listed under $1 million. Two of these residences for sale are on the Gulf of Mexico shoreline and two are on the Sarasota Bay side, a good mix of north, middle and south ends of Longboat Key. While some communities have one month and three month minimum rental restrictions, the two residences on the Gulf side in the Silver Sands and Sand Cay communities can be rented on a weekly basis, two of the least restrictive associations.

Fairway Bay residents appreciate wonderful amenities, including 24-hour manned guard gate, security, on-site management, clubhouse with library and social room, fitness, tennis, swimming pool and heated spa. Bike to deeded beach access at the private Bay Isles Beach Club. The spacious waterfront townhouse at 1900 Harbourside Dr, #101 offers a 3BR plus office interior with three terraces, peaceful views, its own deep-water dockage on Sarasota Bay and many community amenities. This property includes a two-car garage. Bike to enjoy deeded beach access at the Bay Isles Beach Club offered at $789,000.

Grand Bay is a secluded community with views overlooking Sarasota Bay

3080 Grand Bay Blvd, #515
3080 Grand Bay Blvd, #515, Longboat Key

The second featured listing is at Grand Bay, a socially-active community located behind the gates of Bay Isles. Residents enjoy the privilege of access to first-rate amenities including a wonderful clubhouse, game room, library, fitness center, four Har-Tru tennis courts, heated swimming pools and spa. This secluded neighborhood is centrally located just a short drive from the gorgeous grounds of Longboat Key Club's Harbourside and Islandside facilities, Harbourside Moorings Marina, St. Armands Circle and downtown Sarasota.

This charming Bimini residence in Building V at 3080 Grand Bay Blvd, #515 offers beautiful views of Sarasota Bay and downtown that stretch on forever. The south-facing, light and open two-bedroom layout features oversized tile flooring, a neutral décor ready for you to move right into and floor-to-ceiling walls of glass sliders that open to the impressive, extended wraparound terrace from every room. Deeded access to the private Bay Isles Beach Club and two premium, under-building parking spaces are also included for the asking price of $599,000. What a great value in this wonderful secluded community.

North end community of Silver Sands, great residences to enjoy or rent

5841 Gulf of Mexico Dr, #245
5841 Gulf of Mexico Dr, #245, Longboat Key

Silver Sands is situated on the north end shores of Longboat Key beaches. Residents enjoy delightful amenities including shuffleboard, a small putting green to perfect your stroke, heated swimming pool, Gulf-front hammocks and picnic areas. Residents also have the option to lease on a weekly basis all year long. Resort-style living at this two-bedroom Gulf-front retreat will be hard to ever leave. Ideal as a year-round getaway or rental property, this residence at 5841 Gulf of Mexico Dr, #245 listed at $479,000 is ready for you, equipped with a full-sized kitchen, offered turnkey furnished, with ceramic tile flooring throughout and screen-enclosed lanai that opens to the lush community grounds.

Many amenities offered in the Gulf beachfront community of Sand Cay

4725 Gulf of Mexico Dr, #207
4725 Gulf of Mexico Dr, #207, Longboat Key

Also toward the north end, Sand Cay is a quaint beachfront community offering delightful amenities including shuffleboard, tennis, heated swimming pool and a Gulf-front patio deck equipped with barbeque area. Deep sea fishing, boating, fine dining, full-service spa and golfing opportunities are also offered at the renowned Longboat Key Club, just minutes away. This community boasts excellent rental options with on-site rental program management and the option to lease on a weekly basis, all year long. A light and bright beach getaway, this second-floor, furnished Sand Cay residence at 4725 Gulf of Mexico Dr, #207 is the ideal vacation retreat, simply waiting for you to enjoy or rent.

We are thrilled to have broken our annual real estate sales record, wrapping up 2017 with $104.6 million in individual total sales volume throughout the year. The year-end total sets a record sales volume sold by any individual agent ever over a one-year period in Sarasota. Breaking the $100 million mark is extremely exciting for us, especially because it means an almost 25% increase over last year’s record! Please contact me at (941) 387-1840 for an exclusive showing of these properties or if you have a property to sell or buy.

Overhaul of LongboatRealEstate.com completed last week

In January of this year we released a complete redesign of LongboatRealEstate.com. The website featured more video including a main video that stretches the width of the screen on the home page. It was designed with a responsive format that adapts to the size of the screen, making it ideally suited to respond to smartphone and tablet screen sizes. The back-end, along with the responsive design is attractive to the algorithms of the search engines.

Last week we overhauled the menu system with the goal to make the site more user-friendly. Now with one, possibly two clicks, you should be able to navigate to your most desirable location. For visitors who wish to search homes, you can find properties for sale in most Sarasota and Longboat waterfront or luxury estate communities in your price range by finding the community, then the price range. City information and monthly Comparative Market Analysis (CMA) reports back to 2008 are also one-click away.

We still have an advanced search function for those who have an exact idea of what they are searching for. If you want a lifestyle, such as having the Harbourside Golf Course outside your front door, open the Lifestyle Listings and scroll to the Harbourside Golf Course. These links pull from the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) so are updated when they are put into the system. And if you find what you are looking for, please contact me at (941) 387-1840 for an exclusive showing or if you have a property to sell or buy.

Holiday events this weekend

by Roger Pettingell

Get into the spirit of the season

From boat parades and tree lightings to festivals and concerts this weekend

Tree lighting in St. Armands Circle, December 1, 2017
St. Armands Circle Tree Lighting - Santa's entrance and entertainment delighted the crowds on Friday night. Click the image for a short video of weekend highlights.

There certainly was plenty of holiday cheer this past weekend. The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall had An Irish Tenors Christmas on Saturday and LeAnn Rimes Sunday with her Today is Christmas Tour. Then there were boat parades, the Seafood and Music Festival on the Siesta Key Beach, downtown Sarasota holiday parade, and the annual Holiday Night in St. Armands Circle to kick off the season with lighting of the tree. If you want to get into the holiday spirit but missed these events, there are plenty more this weekend in Sarasota and surrounding areas. And many of these events are free to the public.

There are two boat parades on Saturday. Line the shores of Sarasota Bay in downtown Sarasota for good viewing of the Sarasota Holiday Boat Parade of Lights, now celebrating 32 years. Marina Jack will also provide an excellent viewing of the boats in the parade that starts at 6 PM. There is a $20 fee to enter your boat and cash and awards will be presented in five categories. There will be a captain’s meeting on Thursday at 5:30 PM in the Marina Jack Restaurant. For more information go to the website. Proceeds will benefit Suncoast Charities for Children.

Either side of the Manatee River in Palmetto or Bradenton near the Green Bridge will be prime viewing for the Manatee River Holiday Boat Parade that starts at 6:30 PM. The boats will pass the Pier 22 restaurant at 8:30 PM where the judging will take place. Call in advance for dinner reservations and the best parade view. Up to $1,900 for first and second place will be given away in two categories of boats, under 40 feet and over 40 feet. There is no fee to enter but tomorrow is the deadline. Go to their Facebook page for more information and to enter.

While you are in Bradenton on Saturday check out the Sounds of the Season just a block from the river on Old Main Street. From 6 to 10 PM there will be live music and movies. Santa will be there in his village and you can catch some machine-generated snow flakes.

Looking for a holiday treat before the weekend? Catch up on your holiday shopping on Thursday night from 5 to 8PM at the Downtown Venice Christmas Walk. Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus will be there, as well as live music and discount shopping. Head to Lakewood Ranch on Friday night for Holidays Around the Ranch from 6 to 9PM on Main Street. Catch Santa and a slide made of snow. There will be local vendors and entertainment.

There are more events on Saturday including the annual Privateers Christmas Parade at 10 AM on Gulf Drive from Bayfront Park to Coquina Beach. North Port will have a parade of Poinsettia covered floats and tree lighting from 5 to 9:30PM in its Poinsettia Festival. Santa will make his appearance and there will be much to do for children. The Gingerbread Land contest will be on the second floor of City Hall. Venice will light their tree in a celebration from 5 to 7PM Saturday in West Blalock Park. The lighting will mark the first day for the tree to stay lit nightly until 10PM through January 1, 2018. That night there will be a ballet performance of the Nutcracker in the Performing Arts Center in Venice.

Saturday and Sunday head to Lido Beach for their Holiday of the Arts Festival. This is a juried arts festival sponsored by the Sarasota Downtown Merchants Association with 80 artisans from across the country showcasing their original works. The event and parking is free to the public, open 10AM to 5PM each day at 400 Benjamin Franklin Drive.

If you are curious about the dress for Christmas in the 1840s through 1870s go to Ellenton for the Gamble Mansion Christmas. The Ladies of the United Daughters of the Confederacy will be in dress of the period surrounding the Civil War. There will be a confederate encampment as the 4th Florida Volunteer Infantry will be in military uniforms of the era in Gamble Plantation Historic State Park, from 10 AM to 3 PM on Sunday.

The Masterworks Series Symphonic Carnival, under the direction of Anu Tali, will be at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall on Friday and Saturday at 8PM with a third matinee performance on Sunday at 2:30PM. Guest conductor Larry Rachleff will lead the Sarasota Orchestra and feature violin soloist Benjamin Beilman. On Monday, the quartet 98 Degrees At Christmas will hold their Sarasota premiere performance in a 31-city tour to promote their holiday album, Let it Snow, at the Van Wezel starting at 8PM. The group has sold more than 10 million records.

There are other events this weekend worth checking into. Visit St. Armands Circle for Porches in the Park or the concert Messiah at the Church of the Palms in Sarasota, both on Saturday. These events promote life in our little paradise of land in Sarasota and the barrier islands. To date this year I have closed on over $90 million in residential sales, surpassing the personal record I set for myself in 2016 of $77 million. Last week I listed a wonderful residence in building V of Grand Bay, a good value for panoramic views Sarasota Bay and downtown. Please contact me at (941) 387-1840 for an exclusive showing or if you have a property to sell or buy. Enjoy the holidays.
