Programs and events that promote ecology

Saving the oceans through conservation

Local initiatives support programs through Mote and other organizations

Mote Science Education Aquarium
Mote Science Education Aquarium - Completion of this new addition to the park is expected in 2022.

Try a fun little exercise at the next social gathering. Ask someone to name the local organizations involved in animal and sea conservation efforts. You will receive the answers you might expect such as Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium founded by Eugenie Clark. You can sense their level of community involvement if they name Save Our Seabirds with its Avian Hospital.

Every May 1 through October 31 media outlets post outdoor lighting and beach restrictions with the various organizations that gather information on turtle nesting. These organizations made up of mostly volunteers in the Gulf- front areas walk the beaches daily in an effort to give these sea creatures the best opportunity to hatch the next batch of these sea creatures.

Mote’s sea turtle programs are under permits of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Research Institute. Six reporting groups, Venice to Longboat Key: Manatee County, count loggerhead, green and leatherback nesting numbers and reported a record loggerhead 4,926 nests in 2019. Even the four leatherback nests reported created excitement among the 300 volunteers and interns involved in the activities. Leatherbacks are the largest species of turtles and protected as an endangered species.

The Executive Director of the Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring program Suzi Fox, reported 27,298 sea turtle hatchlings in the 2019 season. The record was set in 2018 with 35,788 hatchlings reported. These numbers are not combined in the report from Mote. She spoke on Saturday at the Center of Anna Maria Island. The Center is a non-profit focused on education and offers recreational opportunities for teens on Anna Maria Island. Saturday’s program was to promote their green initiative for fiscal profitability. Fundraising is also through events such as those on Saturday and concerts including one with Sha Na Na on December 14.

Going Green
Center on Anna Maria Island - Announced its Going Green fund drive Saturday night.

There are other conservation programs running under the radar. The Sarasota Bay Estuary program helps to maintain high water quality and habitat restoration. Since 1988, 1,600 acres of wetlands have been restored and there has been a 54 percent recovery of seagrass. The SBEP partners with local city governments to help support their goals. The Audubon Societies in Manatee and Sarasota counties are committed to protecting the environment. The Christmas bird count in Sarasota is popular among ornithologists, to be held January 4 in 2020.

Events throughout the year also bring attention to the earth and the oceans. Earth Day 2020 will be celebrated worldwide on April 22. Over 193 countries will support the Earth Day Network, founded in 1970 on college campuses in the United States. Since then Earth Day has been elevated to promote recycling programs and conservation education. World Oceans Day scheduled for June 8, 2020 draws a collaboration of countries around the globe to educate the importance of the oceans. Local events are also taking place. This upcoming Sunday the Stoked on Salt Ocean Conservation Day in Fort Lauderdale will be promoting its mission of the year, Youth Ocean Education. Groups will discuss issues from coral decay, sea life conservation and water quality.

And of course Mote also has its research and education programs throughout the year. They have long been associated with their outreach programs in shark populations, sea turtles, coral reef ecosystems and have satellites in other countries for research programs. The study of red tide in recent years has received international attention and public funding.

Plans are to continue this research at Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium on City Island even after completed construction of the Mote Science Education Aquarium at Nathan Benderson Park off Interstate 75. Michael Crosby, president and CEO of Mote Marine, recently stated that the goal is to transform this area into the Silicon Valley of marine research. The new location with its five story structure on 12 acres will be more accessible to Manatee and Sarasota resident and serve as an icon for visitors travelling the interstate. Mote SEA is expected to be completed in 2022 and is seeking funds to begin construction.

Phillipe Cousteau, Jr
Phillipe Cousteau, Jr - The grandson of Jacques Cousteau delivered Ocean of Hope keynote address Saturday night at the Center on Anna Maria Island.

The Center on Anna Maria Island invited famed oceanographer Phillipe Cousteau, Jr, grandson of Jacques Cousteau, to deliver its Ocean of Hope keynote address on Saturday night. Jacques Cousteau gained world recognition for his co-development with Emile Gagnon of the Aqua-lung regulator that scuba divers use for underwater breathing. His legacy on the famed Calypso boat traveled the world to study and promote the oceans through television shows and books.

Phillipe continued his father’s work as an oceanographer, who died in an airplane crash shortly before his son was born in 1980. Now an accomplished oceanographer himself, Phillipe Jr co-stars with his wife Ashlan in the Caribbean Pirate Treasure series on the Travel Channel. He received an Emmy nomination in 2017 as host of Awesome Planet. Along with his television productions, he travels to promote education of his conservation efforts. He spoke in front of a packed arena Saturday on environmental issues and the depletion of the mangroves in southwest Florida.

We enjoy the many benefits the Gulf ecosystem provides for us. It’s also my life’s passion to turn visitors into homeowners in this paradise. Last week I listed three homes for sale that may be especially attractive to those who wish to be directly on the water. The luxury of brand-new, Gulf-front living can be yours to enjoy at this stunning, 5BR beach estate at 2905 Casey Key Road. Situated directly on the private shores of Casey Key, this elevated home offers more than a 1/2- acre of beachfront property and was just built in 2019. Ideal Gulf-front living is a breeze at this 4BR beach home. Flourishing in recent renovations, from the Florida pine wood floors, to the glass French doors that open to your own boardwalk to the beach, this delightful getaway will be hard to ever leave at 7760 Manasota Key Road. Home showcase series on Winding Oaks

by Roger Pettingell

Location, private and beach access

Winding Oaks properties are featured in this Home Showcase XXXX article

REALTALK™ #216
Winding Oaks - Featured in REALTALK™ #216.

Looking for a community with Gulf of Mexico beach access, high walkability score, is private and family oriented, then you should look at the neighborhood of Winding Oaks in a great location on Longboat Key. These two and three bedroom live like single family homes, most with golf and water views. I discussed two of my active listings there, its features and amenities in REALTALK™ #216.

Behind the secure gates of Bay Isles, Winding Oaks is centrally located with homes that have their own private courtyards and decks. The high ceilings of these homes present a light and open feeling, built with comfort in mind between 1988 and 1991. Most of the 58 homes are equipped with 2-car attached garages. Relish a luxurious maintenance-free lifestyle in Winding Oaks.

And the Bay Isles Beach Club is a short bicycle ride. Homeowners enjoy deeded beach access through the beach club. With your club card you will find many of the pleasures that exist for members any time of the day or night. This private beach on the beautiful sands of the Gulf has showers, pavilions, picnic areas with grills, sand volleyball courts and restrooms. The amenities make for a relaxing day at the beach.

3431 Winding Oaks Dr, #16
Winding Oaks - 3427 Winding Oaks Dr, #14.

The first listing to discuss is 3427 Winding Oaks Dr, #14. Contemporary upgrades accentuate every inch of this chic waterfront residence. You will adore the radiant ambiance this 3BR villa creates with its clean lines, unique flooring, plus designer kitchen that opens to the living/dining room and relaxing views beyond. This home offers a screened patio and its own pool.

As you stroll outside your Winding Oaks home you can sense the friendly atmosphere as you encounter others walking or biking on the streets and walkway trails. You will also see that this is a very pet-friendly community with little restrictions on the size of your pooch. Walk a little further and you will be standing in front of Publix and the boutique shops in the plaza at the entrance to Bay Isles.

3431 Winding Oaks Dr, #16
Winding Oaks - 3431 Winding Oaks Dr, #16.

A little walk from my first listing is my second listing at 3431 Winding Oaks Dr, #16. Situated in a prime spot, overlooking peaceful lake waters, this 3BR Winding Oaks residence has been recently updated throughout. Offering a single-family home atmosphere, with its more than 2,500-square- feet of interior, two-car garage, cathedral ceilings, as well as wraparound walls of glass windows and sliders that open to the terrace or atrium in multiple rooms and enhance the light and lofty mood throughout.

I have three new properties I put on the market last week. Hailed as one of the best lots in Harbor Acres, spectacular direct views of Sarasota Bay, John Ringling Bridge, downtown’s cityscape and sights of sailboats abound around every corner of this five-bedroom estate at 1364 Harbor Drive. Looking for something to fit a lower budget, look at 453 East Royal Flamingo Drive in Bird Key or 99 Sunset Dr, #102 at Lawrence Pointe in Sarasota. Entertainment series continues with the arts

by Roger Pettingell

A cultural arts city for everyone

Part IV of this series highlights the winter season devoted to the classics

Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall
Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall

Anyone who has lived in Sarasota and Bradenton for any length of time can tell you that the cultural arts are of the highest quality, particularly for cities of their size. Accordingly, they were named respectively in American Style Magazine’s top arts destinations in the nation for populations of 100,000 or less. This area supports the arts as operas, symphonies and ballets that are well attended.

The season is approaching critical mass. The Sarasota Ballet, under the direction of Iain Webb has its schedule out for the 2019-20 season. Webb is an accomplished dancer and choreographer, formerly with the Royal Ballet in London. While many of the performances are at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts on the grounds of The Ringling Museum, they do stray for special productions at the Sarasota Opera House and Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.

Seven programs in all, the first has already been completed late last month, Graziano, Retrospective, choreography by Ricardo Graziano. Symphonic Tales November 22-23 continues with Program 2 at the Sarasota Opera House. John Ringling’s Circus Nutcracker is a holiday favorite, to be held at the Van Wezel December 20-21. The year 2020 rings in with the Ballet Gala on January 5, a performance and dinner catered by Michael’s on East at the Opera House. The ballet returns to the Van Wezel for a special performance of Romeo and Juliet, Program 6, for two nights, March 27-28. Redefined Movement, January 31 through February 3, and the Paul Taylor Dance Company February 28 through March 1 are scheduled at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts, Programs 4 and 5. The internationally known dance company has performed in over 500 cities in 64 countries. Beyond Words at the Opera House April 24 and 25 is a company premiere. Information and tickets are available through the Sarasota Ballet website.

If you really want to see ballet from an expert perspective, visit Inside The Studio at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts Hall, November 13. It is a behind the scenes look at the rehearsal of Las Hermanas – Repression and Oppression. Tickets are selling out fast through this special link of Sarasota Ballet website.

Classical music taps into the hearts of concert attendees

Asolo Repertory Theatre
Florida State University Center for the Performing Arts - Asolo Repertory Theatre

The Sarasota Orchestra accompanies the John Ringling’s Circus Nutcracker in December. This classic has a Sarasota theme as an honor to one of the greatest circus magnates. The orchestra also performs the live music for the Romeo & Juliet ballet in March. Their schedule has a series of Masterworks, Great Escapes, Pops and Chamber music on tap, beginning with the Classical Romance, a Masterworks program arrangement, this Friday through Sunday at the Van Wezel. As a special treat to classical music lovers, enjoy a conversation with guest conductor Gerard Schwarz who will preview the concert on Thursday at the Beatrice Friedman Symphony Center. A sold-out dinner with the conductor laureate of the Seattle Symphony will be held later on Thursday at the PNC Bank third floor.

The Masterworks series continues December 6 through 8, Roman Festivals with guest conductor Joann Falletta. A Mozart and Mahler program January 17 to 19 with guest conductor Steven Sloane; Ludovic Morlot conducts, Chang Plays Dvorak January 30 through February 2; The Sounds of Nobility, February 21 through 23 with guest conductor Bramwell Tovey; Keith Lockhart conducts Beethoven to Bartok, March 12 through 15 and an American Impressions program led by Teddy Abrams, April 3 through 5 completes the Masterworks sessions. Most of these concerts are held at the Van Wezel, with only a couple at the Neel Performing Arts Center in Bradenton. A conversation with guest conductors before each concert and dinners are also planned.

The Great Escapes series typically start on Wednesdays and run for five days through Sundays, scheduled December through March. The programs in Holley Hall are generally shortened to one hour on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays with no intermissions. Full programs with a discussion from the conductors are held on Thursdays and Saturdays. The four scheduled Pops concert series are two or three day runs. The first of three Chamber music sessions of one day is sold out and there are special concerts on the Sarasota Orchestra website. Subscriptions for the season can also be purchased online.

For three weeks in June the Sarasota Music Festival, a program of the Sarasota Orchestra, attracts classical music aficionados with themed concerts Thursdays through Sundays. It is a festival of true delight as visitors from many countries participate as a patron of the arts, performers and students who are selected through an audition process to learn from the masters. The full schedule for the 2020 Sarasota Music Festival will be announced in February.

Learn opera from the experts, then be amazed by its passionate performances

Sarasota Opera House
Sarasota Opera House

Unfamiliar with opera? There are plenty of opportunities to brush up before you go to witness one of the great cultural staples of Sarasota. During the November to March season the opera house opens its doors on Mondays to tour the iconic building in downtown Sarasota. A docent will discuss the different aspects of opera, the building and backstage tour. Understanding Opera, four talks by Executive Director Richard Russell and Director of Artistic Administration Greg Trupiano, discuss the topics that seasoned fans and novice patrons can learn from the experts. The next At the Opera with Richard & Greg will be held on Thursday.

Rigoletto, Love is Dangerous, is an opera with four performances on the schedule in November. This ring of three figure out that love can be treacherous, one of Verdi’s greatest works. With two shows in November, Brundibár, Love Conquers Evil, a name from Czechoslovakia for bumblebee is a children’s opera that was first performed in 1938 as a government competition.

Four love themed operas continue in the 2020 Winter Opera Festival February and March. La bohème, Love is Fragile is sung in Italian and translated in English. With music by Giacomo Puccini, the opera is in four acts. The classic Love is Forever opera, Romeo and Juliet, is sung in French with English translations. The combination of William Shakespeare’s genius with the musical composition of Charles Gounod, this five-act opera is on the list of many fans. In The Elixir of Love, Love is Intoxicating, Dulcamara's love potion turns a wary Adina to be become romantically involved with Nemorino, sung in Italian. Also sung in Italian but translated into English, La Wally, Love Hurts, has a chain of events that leads to a tragic ending. Single tickets, subscriptions and group sales are available on their Sarasota Opera website. These events and many others are on my upcoming schedule page with a schedule that continues through June 27, 2020.

Last week I listed a charming house at 1715 Hyde Park Street. Well-appointed updates adorn every room of this 4BR downtown residence. The impressive exterior creates a wonderful spot to relax the day away and features wraparound porches, as well as elaborate entertaining spaces. You will love the central “West of the Trail” locale, just minutes from lively downtown Sarasota. Please contact me at (941) 387-1840 for an exclusive showing or if you have a property to sell or buy.
