At 96.3 FM, music from a bygone era

The only radio station licensed on Longboat Key, and playing beach tunes

Little Anthony and the Imperials
Little Anthony - Listen to Tears on my Pillow at WULB.

You’re cruising along in your automobile on Gulf of Mexico Drive listening to Little Anthony’s smooth voice and the music of Tears on My Pillow through the car speakers. The 1959 song switches and you’re listening to a Jim Croce melody, I’ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song. This isn’t the era of the 8-track but today with songs reminiscent of American Graffiti, even though you may be in your 2019 Lexus listening to the radio.

Odd as it may seem, the FM oldies radio station at 96.3 MHz is the only station exclusively licensed for Longboat Key. Broadcasting as the station for beach music lovers, the single vinyl genre from the 1950s to the 70s is to stimulate a nostalgic replay of those wonderful years. These are the right songs for the demographic with a median age of 71.

WULB has an Internet presence at The Beach WULB website, even has a Facebook page, Twitter account and you can find it streaming on sites such as TuneIn.com. Longboat Key weather and news is available through links from their website to the Longboat Key News weekly paper online.

The station is a Low Power FM broadcast started in the summer of 2015. The unidirectional antenna is at a low height of 12 meters. Its analog signal can reach the mainland but don’t count on the full strength where you would lose it completely north of Palmetto and south of Venice.

WULB
Nostalgia will keep you on this radio station at 96.3.

If you look up the building address you won’t find sales and production offices surrounding a slick lobby area. There isn’t a sound studio behind glass either where you might find a DJ imitating Wolfman Jack. Instead, its presence is just an antenna on top of a non-descript building near the middle of Longboat Key. The station is licensed to M&M Development, a non-profit organization headed by a local business consultant. The best way to contact the owners is by email. As of now there is little advertising solicitation, even when they break from the music to announce their call sign with station identification. Neither is there a link on the website to contact the advertising department.

It fills a void by providing music from a by-gone era and has no competition, even from the Tampa FM radio stations. You can find a number of these stations in St. Petersburg and Tampa that play a different genre classified as classic rock. Although one station plays oldies music in south Sarasota, WSRZ at 107.9 MHz, stick with WULB on Longboat Key for consistent beach music. It’s even hard to find an XM or Sirius broadcast, again the broad signal is hard for the demographics.

There are other local radio stations that offer a variety of music. The Shark, WPBB at FM 98.7 MHz, is a Holmes Beach station owned by the Beasley Media Group and plays classic rock. The other local classic rock station licensed in Sarasota is a member of the Cox Radio group, 102.5 MHz, The Bone. WRUB in Sarasota is a country music station at 106.5 MHz.

The University of South Florida broadcasts classical music from its campus location near the airport at 89.1 MHz, WSMR. The station WSLR at 96.5 MHz FM is another low-power broadcast offering a variety of selections. There are three local stations with religious content, WKZM at 104.3 MHz, WJIS at 88.1 MHz and the low-power broadcast from Bradenton at 102.1 MHz, WOPC.

While on the subject of Longboat Key, I listed two residences last week for sale on the water. Grand Bay is a hot market now and the new listing in building II is a seventh-floor gem at 3040 Grand Bay Blvd, #275. The penthouse in Windward Bay overlooks its own marina and Sarasota Bay at 4960 Gulf of Mexico Dr, #PH5.
