20th REALTALK Video Celebrated

by Roger Pettingell

REALTALK™ Celebrated with 20th Video

Sarasota Real Estate Topics Discussed in Weekly Show

Florida Realtor Magazine, September 2014
It's Showtime! - The production of REALTALK™ was picked up by Florida Realtor Magazine for its September 2014 issue.

In April I started a video series called REALTALK™ that I wanted to highlight the local real estate market, explain how to buy and sell homes in Sarasota and the surrounding keys, and to point out events of interest. We just completed our 20th video last week. In this video we talk about the market, looking ahead to 2015.

In each of the videos we transcribe them for closed captioning and put them up on a web page devoted to the REALTALK™ series. The history of all 20 videos are there with a brief description of each. I am proud to say that most REALTALK™ videos have over 100 views. The series has its own playlist on my YouTube channel.

The success has been recognized in the real estate market. The series caught the attention of editors at Florida Realtor magazine and an article on the show appeared in the September edition. It was good exposure, covering the production and history of the show.

In this week’s show on Wednesday we get into insurance topics and feature who I consider to be one of the most knowledgeable agents for property insurance, Mike Mailliard of MIC Insurance, Longboat Key. Having a highly respected professional on the show is good for the topic. It is my hope that we have more local experts to discuss topics that pertain to real estate.

I am optimistic that the show will have a continued success. I ask that if you like a show, please retweet the message or forward the link from Facebook. I am also interested in your comments on the show, or topics that you would like to see covered in upcoming editions. I get most of my show ideas from clients. Here is a complete list of all 20 REALTALK™ videos.

Guide Dog Open House

Southeastern Guide Dog Open House

Beautiful Training Facility in Palmetto on 35 Acres

Southeastern Guide Dogs, Palmetto campus open house October 25, 2014
Saturday Open House - Southeastern Guide Dogs, Palmetto campus open house this Saturday.

One of the great pleasures I get in life is when I am donating my time for a good cause. So the time I spend as a member of the Board of Directors of the Southeastern Guide Dogs is time very well spent.

I have trained four dogs that went on to become service dogs for the visually impaired. In fact, since 1982 over 2,800 Southeastern Guide Dogs have been paired with their partner in this much needed service. There are 400 dogs in active service now. I point this out because the training facility in Palmetto is holding an open house this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

This amazing campus on 35 acres serves as the training facility for the area. On Saturday there will be presentations on the training and grooming of the dogs in training. It is intended to give you as much information on the process so that you might have an interest for getting involved in any way possible. And if you are up to it, volunteer to be blindfolded and let one of these dogs lead you with expert precision. The fun starts with the Ambassador Dog meet-and-greet and continues from there. Plan your picnic outing for the family or for friends.

The Southeastern Guide Dogs program employs over 100 and operates the non-profit training facilities in Sarasota, Bradenton, and St. Petersburg. The Palmetto campus operates three kennels, has nine student rooms, a full-service cafeteria, a gift shop, and an administrative facility. The Freedom Walk features nearly a mile and a half of paved walkways and an obstacle course for guide dog training.

The dogs are trained for specific services. The Paws for Independence™ program matches students with their instructor for 26 days of classroom activity before graduating. In this program the pairs learn to function in the streets, at cross walks, and shopping situations. It gives a visually impaired person a new respect and new found freedom.

The Paws for Patriots™ program is designed for retired and disabled veterans. Those who have sacrificed so much for this country are given freedom by relying on these fantastic dogs in this program. There are two other programs in the Paws for Patriots. Gifted dogs support veterans of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, allowing veterans to function well with family and friends. Facility therapy dogs are placed in veteran hospitals to provide comfort and cheer among the wounded veterans.

Canine Connections Dogs in the Gifted Canines™ program pairs visually impaired children over the age of 10 to prepare them for lives as an adult once they turn 18. Other dogs in this program are trained in rescue or arson, bomb, and drug detection. As you can see, this training facility is very functional in a variety of capacities.

They do want you to RSVP before attending on Saturday. Most of the campus will be open but I’ve been told they are limiting the popular puppy hugging program. However, the state of the art Margaret and Isaac Barpal Veterinary Center will be open for tours. The Palmetto campus is located at 4210 77th Street East, Palmetto. For more information you can call (941) 729-5665. See all of the special events of Southeastern Guide Dogs.

Please take a look at our new listing at 535 Sanctuary Drive on Longboat Key. This three bedroom, two and half bath residence has impressive views of the Gulf, Sanctuary community, the bay, downtown Sarasota and the beautiful green of Islandside golf course from every room. Please call the office at (941) 387-1840 when you are ready to buy or sell property.

Sarasota Arts Festival Week

by Roger Pettingell

Ringling International Arts Festival is Here

Performers from many countries hit four museum stages

Ringling International Arts Festival
Ringling International Arts Festival - The courtyard will be transformed Wednesday for the grand opening.

Last week there was a big architecture event, SarasotaMOD. I congratulate the Sarasota Architectural Foundation for a successful weekend event.

This week we turn to the arts with the Ringling International Arts Festival. The four-day event of live entertaining including dance, stage performances signals the start of the cultural season here in Sarasota. Four venues within walking distance from each other on the campus of the Ringling Museum of Art will feature artists and performers from around the globe. This is truly an international arts festival and well respected with high quality entertainment.

The opening night celebration begins in the Ringling courtyard on Wednesday, “Bolero Sarasota.” It is a package starting at 7 p.m. with performances by Tangram, Duo Amal and the Pedrito Mertinez Group. Bolero is a combination of Latin music and dance. This ceremony is open to guests, with hors d’oeuvres, drinks and a fireworks show to set the mood for the remainder of the week.

Opening night seems to set the mood for the remainder of the festival. Tangram is a hybrid dance performance by the duo of Cristiana Casadio and juggler Stefan Sing. This married couple from Berlin combines ballet with a circus performance. If you miss them opening night they can be seen four more times with a double performance on Friday at 2 and 8 p.m.

Palestinian and Israeli pianists, Bishara Haroni and Yaron Kohlberg form Duo Amal, also perform on opening night. Their performances are part of their United States tour with scheduled shows daily through Saturday at the Mildred Sainer Pavilion.

The Pedrito Martinez Group, featuring Ariacne Trujillo are five Latin American rumba virtuoso performances that have a similar festival schedule as Tangram with two performances on Friday.

Excitement has been building for the dance performances by choreographer, Larry Keigwin. His small troupe of six dancers from New York celebrates its tenth anniversary this year as Keigwin + Co. These performances are sometimes humorous and will represent the changing evolution of his work over the years. They are on stage at the Historic Asolo Theater starting with two shows on Thursday.

The "Intergalactic Nemesis: Book One, Target Earth" is billed as appropriate for ages seven years old and up. This is a live action novel performance  combining radio drama with graphic storytelling. There are four shows in three days, two on Friday at the Mertz Theatre. Think of this as the War of the Worlds for kids.

"The Table," a puppet show in Cook Theatre is actually not intended for children and features Moses, a table puppet with a crisis. The puppeteer regularly appears at the Blind Summit Theatre in Great Britain. Five shows are scheduled, with two on Thursday and two on Saturday.

Powerful, cutting edge new music from the Vijay Iyer Trio starts Thursday with concerts at the Mildred Sainer Pavilion. Expect some audience interaction with the trio of  Vijay Iyer, Marcus Gilmore and Stephan Crump.

The museum continues its Jazz Sunsets on the Bay, Thursday and Friday with Heffner and Hefner. The jazz group of Katt Hefner, Stan “The Man” Heffner, Butch Thomas, Vincent Sims and James Vernado entertain at Bayshore Gardens starting at 5 p.m. These concerts are included with your Ringling International Arts Festival performance ticket, are free with Art after 5 admission and with museum admission these two days.

It should be a great four days of lively entertainment to kick off the 2014-15 arts season here. Go to the Ringling International Arts Festival website for a full list of the performances, times and for tickets to the shows. They also have a contact phone number for more information at (941) 359-5700.

We have many upcoming events including the arts festival this week on our website, updated today to complete a total of 351 events listed through August 2, 2015. The height of the season is drawing near. Please contact me at (941) 387-1840 when you are ready to sell your residence or are interested in purchasing in the Sarasota or Longboat Key area. See my inventory of featured listings in the Sarasota luxury waterfront market.

You can read my thoughts on the 2014-15 trends for the local luxury housing market in an interview with Josh Salman of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune for his article, "Luxury market forecast to continue slow climb." I discuss these trends Wednesday in a new episode of REALTALK™.

SarasotaMOD Architecture Weekend

Mid-Century Sarasota Architecture Weekend

The Sarasota Architectural Foundation Celebrated Events

In 1983 architect Don Chappell was inspired by The Sarasota School of Architecture to build this home on Lido Key
1070 Westway Drive - In 1983 architect Don Chappell was inspired by The Sarasota School of Architecture to design this home overlooking Pansey Bayou.

Thursday is the opening reception for the SarasotaMOD weekend, four days to highlight the architecture of this great city. If you are a fan of the area and its building designs, this will be a pleasurable experience for you.

This is significant for Sarasota, as many top architects, designers and authors will be in town to praise or be critical of our mid-century architecture. The opening ceremony at the History Center Museum is sold out, as are a couple other high profile presentations. Its popularity reached out to a worldwide audience soon after the inaugural event was announced this summer so buying in advance makes sense. At these events you will be rubbing elbows with some of the best that the architectural world has to offer. And there are plenty of opportunities at meet-and-greets starting with the poolside dinner Thursday at the Sarasota Yacht Club.

The keynote address by Lawrence Scarpa at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at the Ringling College of Art + Design might be one of those great options. Seating is still available for the speech by Scarpa, principal at Brooks+Scarpa Architects. His firm has received over 50 major design awards, he has lectured at some of the most prestigious schools in the country, this year received the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Architecture and has appeared as a guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show. His address is followed by a dinner at Ca’ d’Zan, famous as the home of John and Mable Ringling and now part of the museum.

Ca d’Zan
Guests are treated to tours and reception at Ca’ d’Zan following the keynote address on Friday night.

There is a book signing by the authors in attendance on Friday and Saturday, from 1:30 – 3 p.m. at the Francis. Most of the lectures and presentations that are not of the traveling nature will be held at the Francis, 1289 North Palm Avenue. Seven of the nine traveling tours are sold out.

There is still good seating available at the presentations. An on-stage interview with the author of “The Sarasota School of Architecture”, John Howey takes place on Friday as one of the events over the weekend. The School of Architecture started after World War II and developed into one of the premier learning institutes for professional architects, including Paul Rudolph, Ralph Twitchell and Victor Lundy. Paul Rudolph will present “Beyond Sarasota” at 2 p.m. Friday, his two trolley tours are sold out. Other guest lecturers Carl Abbott, Raymond Jungles and Alastair Gordon are also on the weekend agenda.

The inaugural SarasotaMOD is patterned after Palm Springs Modernism Week, which will be in its tenth year in February. The Sarasota Architectural Foundation, formed in 2002 is responsible for putting on SarasotaMOD. SAF promotes the Sarasota School of Architecture with lectures so this weekend is a good fit for its mission. All 26 events can be found on their website. As for other local upcoming events, I have 370 festivals, arts and business lectures listed through August 2, 2015 on my web page.

In 1983 architect Don Chappell was inspired by the Sarasota School of Architecture to design one of my new listings at 1070 Westway Drive and also provided inspiration for the addition by Guy Peterson. Like these homeowners overlooking Pansey Bayou, now is the time to list your home for sale so the snowbirds have a good inventory.

These recently signed sellers are offering their new listings. Another cold spell is expected up north this winter so we expect another active season here on Longboat Key and in Sarasota. Please call the office at (941) 387-1840 when you are ready to buy or sell property.
